Not everybody has the talent it takes to become a good salesman. If you are the one who won the prize for the best fundraiser in junior high and excelled in debate and speech classes than you can be pretty sure that you have the talent it takes to succeed as a salesman.

A job interview is important for every career, but if you are applying for an entry level sales job you have to find a way to bring your performance during the interview to a higher level. Your first sales assignment is your job interview. Basically you are showing a future employer that you can sell everything, even yourself just by talking. Do well at your job interview and there is a pretty good chance that you will do great as a salesman.

Learn everything there is to know and to share about the company and its products. Potential customers can come up with some very interesting questions. If the potential customer gets to see a confident salesman it is more likely that he will actually purchase the product of interest. People with no self confidence or very low self esteem usually do not become good salesman. Being able to speak another language or even several other languages improves your chances of getting hired because you will be able to approach more potential customers. Working as an entry level salesman will allow you to show your environment that you have the ability and talents to grow to a higher level on the ladder to become a top salesman. Keep in mind that it is always easier to become a good salesman in an area that interests you more. If you are always reading up on cars and motorbikes then it is very likely that you will do better working for a car dealership than a men’s clothing store. Keep that in mind when you decide what companies to apply for. For some positions it might be required for you to have a business or marketing degree or at least to be working on that goal when you apply for an entry level salesman job.

Some entry level salesmen work for a fixed salary. This is usually the case for regular store clerks. Their hourly wages are usually low compared to other professions. Working as an entry level store clerk usually gives you about eight to ten dollars an hour. Some other employers, for instance car dealerships, offer their salesmen a low base salary of around sixteen hundred dollars a month with an opportunity to enhance that salary with commissions on sales and bonuses for achievements. You will have to keep in mind however that if you work week after week without being able to set up some good deals and get commission for your accomplishments your employer is not going to keep you very long. He will soon find another entry level salesman to replace you, hoping to find a salesman that offers more perspective to the company that he is leading.

Good entry level salesmen are high in demand. All car dealerships offer these entry level positions in the hope to find that small percentage of extremely successful salesmen before the competition finds them. The job interview is the first selection process. Expect however to be constantly watched and evaluated from the day you are hired as an entry level salesman until the day you bring your position to the next level.
